But it's not just the northern cities at risk. Calgary is under the same alert with current temperatures of -30 C and a windchill of -42 C.

"A prolonged period of very cold wind chills is expected," stated Environment Canada (EC).

EC is recommending that pets stay inside and people should take necessary precautions to avoid frostbite, which can occur within minutes.

The extreme cold weather alert is due to an Arctic air mass that is blanketing major portions of Canada.

The frigid Arctic air mass is hitting northern Ontario with wind chill temperatures sitting at -45 and is expected to drop again on Monday.

EC is encouraging residents to check on older family, friends and neighbours.

These cold temperatures are hitting southern Ontario as well, with warnings of -30 C in Toronto.

"Although winds are relatively light, the extreme cold is expected to produce windchill values below minus 30 this morning, and again tonight. New Year's Eve revellers are cautioned that windchill values will be near minus 30 late this evening as we ring in 2018," stated EC regarding Toronto.

Northern B.C. is also under an extreme cold warning, as well as portions of the Yukon, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec.
