Just like November and December 2018, the two months that preceded January 2019, last month was once again drier and warmer than the climatic average.
January is typically our second coolest month of the year with an average daytime high of 0.8C. Our average overnight low for the month of January is -5.8C. These averages are based on data between the years of 1981 to 2010. There is just a difference of 0.1C from the December averages, the coolest month (The December daytime high average is 0.7C and overnight average is -5.9C).
In January 2019, our average daytime high was almost a couple of degrees warmer than average at 2.5C. Out of the 31 days last month, 23 days had daytime highs above freezing with Friday January 4, 2019 being the warmest day last month hitting double digits at 10.3C!
When we look at the precipitation stats, January 2019 saw much less rain and snow compared to other January months. The sum of the total rainfall and the water equivalent of the total snowfall in millimetres on average for the month of January is 31.0mm, but last month we only saw just over half of that amount at 16.4mm.
Get ready to bundle up Kelowna! As we look at some long range weather charts, cold Arctic air will move into the area starting Sunday. Signs point to a cooler than average stretch for at least the first week of February, if not longer.
